Where does “AGOGA” come from?
AGŌGA (pronounced ah-go-jyah) is the Spartan word for the education and training regimen used to create “a class of warrior citizens” – strong of mind, unflinchingly loyal and physically unmatched.
Just like the athletes and warriors of old, we believe in training our bodies the way nature intended them to be used. We were born to move – to run, jump, lift and climb in response to our environment. This type of training is called functional training and it’s at the core of all our workouts.
What type of classes do we have?
All classes are based on the methods of athletes, coaches and scientific strategies from around the world.
Expect to do workouts from the diaries of people like Usain Bolt, Cathy Freeman, Bruce Lee and Michael Cheika (coach of the Wallabies)! Every week is different to keep your body progressing and your mind engaged.
Each type of class is specifically designed to achieve different goals with your body. We highly recommend mixing up your routine to include more than one type of class to stay in balance and challenge yourself in different ways.
I’ve been going here for just over 1 year now and have felt and seen my body progress the entire time. Functional fitness that really does make a difference to how I move and carry myself. Incredibly knowledgable trainers and new sessions every week keep me coming back for more, this gym will change your life!

What’s the culture and environment like?
At AGOGA we’re all heart, no ego. We’re in this business because we absolutely love it and we want you to love it too so we make sure AGOGA is a non-threatening, easy going and accessible environment that caters to most levels of fitness. This doesn’t mean you won’t be pushed (quite the opposite!) but it does mean you’ll love every minute of your training, as we put you through your paces with sessions at the cutting edge of exercise science.
Our community is really inclusive, welcoming and friendly (you’ll definitely make lots of friends!), and our trainers are caring, well educated and passionate about health, fitness and nutrition. They’re also there to help you, so please don’t be afraid to ask if you need a little extra advice and guidance (e.g. with your nutrition or exercise form).
We have music with every session, which helps up the intensity!
Really personable trainers. Friendly environment. Fun, dynamic and interesting classes which all have a theme… a really cool workout. Have already recommended friends at work to come along.

What is Functional Training?
Functional training is all about multi-plane movement. Unlike traditional weights programs, which focus on training specific muscles (biceps, quads, hamstrings) and often in limited planes of motion, functional programs also include the various supporting muscles and focus on all the different movements our bodies are capable of performing. This means you’re training to move effectively in the way you’re biologically evolved to – forward, backward, side-to-side, twisting, turning, jumping, balancing, etc.
Your reaction time will improve, core strength will skyrocket and we’ll help you create a natural, symmetrical body that looks great, feels more agile and is not injured as easily. By challenging your body in every possible direction, you’re also guaranteed to naturally engage in a full-body workout that will burn serious calories!
Functional programs utilise functional cable systems, BOSU® discs, medicine balls, kettlebells, dumbbells, TRX, power bands and bodyweight sequences.
I have never liked any training system UNTIL I met the AGOGA team. The best instructors in Australia with the most exciting and innovative training. The guys and girls change the program weekly and keep it interesting. Functional training is the future and AGOGA is the leading edge.

What is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)?
All our indoor workouts are 50 minutes long. Why? We focus on high intensity interval training (HIIT), which improves muscle density / fibre quality and it simply takes less time to achieve results. In fact, when training with intensity you can sometimes overdo it, which is why we limit class length.
This is all backed up by the latest scientific studies, which confirm that exercising in shorter bursts with rest periods in between burns more fat than exercising continuously for an entire session. Some studies have shown that interval training can be up to nine times more effective than longer, slower cardio sessions. The analogy we like to use to explain this is a jumbo jet – it uses much more fuel to take off than to cruise at altitude and it’s the same with your body. Even marathon runners benefit enormously from including interval sessions in their training regime.
Running based interval training is conducted on Woodway treadmills – the Rolls Royce of treadmills and scientifically proven to reduce harmful shock to joints, muscles and connective tissue. Unlike regular treadmills, Woodways allow a natural running style and are ideal for improving running technique and rehabilitation.
I recently celebrated my 1 year ‘Agogaversary’ and I am still absolutely in love with the place. The functional style of resistance and HIIT training is fun, absorbing and has improved my fitness so much! I have always loved exercising, but now it has become a bit of an addiction… It helps that the trainers are so much fun, knowledgable and friendly. Finally, I am currently in the process of looking for a home to buy… and Agoga is a big part of why I’m focusing my search to Bondi!
